Quick Guide to DAFO® Brace Selection

The DAFO® Guide to Brace Selection helps clinicians match patient presentation with the appropriate orthotic solution. It is designed to support efficient decision making during evaluation and prescription.

How to Use the Guide

Step 1: Identify the patient presentation

Patient groups are organized by common gait and postitioning challenges, such as:

Low Tone Pronation

Low muscle tone in the foot and ankle limits the body’s ability to hold or transition through balanced positions.

High Tone Pronation

Increased muscle tone creates stiffness and resistance, preventing the foot from adjusting.

Excess Dorsiflexion

Ankle flexion moves too far upward during weight-bearing, contributing to unstable posture.

Swing Phase Inconsistency

Increased muscle tone creates stiffness and resistance, preventing smooth transition between pronation and supination.

Knee Hyperextension

The knee extends backward beyond its neutral range as compensation for limited ankle control.

Excess Plantarflexion

The ankle points downward through gait, often reducing or eliminating heel contact with the ground.

Positioning

Applies to patients with limited or no ambulation, focusing on comfort, protection, and functional alignment. test
